Gua Sha vs Facial Lymphatic Drainage: What is the Difference?
Gua sha and facial lymphatic drainage are often mentioned together, but they are not the same technique. Here is what each one does, how they differ and which may help with puffiness.

Gua sha and lymphatic drainage are often mentioned together online, but they are two different approaches to facial massage.
Both can involve gentle movements across the face. Both are associated with reducing puffiness. Both have become hugely popular. But the techniques — and the evidence behind them — are not identical.
This article is beauty and wellness information, not medical advice. For the wider picture, start with our guide to [lymphatic drainage massage](/journal/lymphatic-drainage-massage).
What is gua sha?
Gua sha is a traditional technique that involves moving a smooth tool across the skin. Modern beauty routines commonly use flat stone tools made from materials such as jade or rose quartz, moved across the face in controlled strokes.
Gua sha is often promoted for facial massage, relaxation, a temporary reduction in puffiness, muscle tension and circulation. Many of the more dramatic anti-ageing and facial-sculpting claims circulating online have limited evidence.

What is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage is a specialised massage technique intended to encourage the movement of lymph fluid, generally using very light pressure. Clinical manual lymphatic drainage is used as part of treatment for conditions such as lymphoedema, and the NHS includes it within decongestive lymphatic therapy. Facial lymphatic massage is the cosmetic version increasingly used to address temporary puffiness.
So which is better?
There is no simple winner. It depends what you are trying to achieve.
If you want relaxation
Both can be enjoyable.
If you want to temporarily reduce facial puffiness
Gentle facial massage may help, including techniques intended to encourage lymphatic movement — Cleveland Clinic describes light-touch facial self-massage for exactly this.
If you have lymphoedema
That is different. Seek advice from a suitably trained healthcare professional rather than relying on a beauty tutorial.
If you are expecting permanent facial sculpting
Neither should be sold as a replacement for changes in body composition, medical treatment or cosmetic procedures.
Can gua sha help lymphatic drainage?
Potentially, if performed gently. Research has suggested that facial massage techniques can affect blood and lymphatic flow, but the evidence base for many cosmetic claims remains relatively small.
A 2025 randomised controlled trial involving facial rollers and gua sha found measurable changes in facial contour and other parameters after eight weeks of regular use. That is interesting — but it should not be read as proof that gua sha melts facial fat or permanently changes facial anatomy.
Interesting is not the same as proven, and a small trial is not a promise about your face.
The biggest mistake people make
Pressure. A common misconception is that you need to press hard to get results. With lymphatic drainage the opposite is generally true, because the vessels being targeted are relatively superficial. If your face is going red and you are dragging a stone aggressively across it, you are not improving the technique.
Can you combine gua sha with skincare?
Yes. A facial oil or suitable skincare product provides slip and reduces unnecessary pulling. Choose something appropriate for your skin and keep your movements controlled.

Gua sha vs facial roller
These are also different. A facial roller uses a rolling action; gua sha uses a flat tool with more controlled strokes. The 2025 randomised controlled trial compared the two approaches and found different effects on facial parameters, although the study was relatively small — interesting rather than definitive. If you are choosing between them, see our guide to lymphatic drainage tools.
Noui's verdict
- Gua sha: a massage technique using a tool.
- Lymphatic drainage: a specific technique designed to encourage lymph movement.
- For morning facial puffiness: a gentle facial massage may be worth trying.
- For permanent facial sculpting: keep expectations realistic.
