Drugstore Body Care Dupes: What Actually Matters in the Formula
Body lotion is the easiest category to save money in — if you know which four ingredients decide whether a cheap formula performs.
Noui Collective · · 7 min read

Body care is where premium pricing is hardest to justify. The chemistry of a good moisturiser has been settled for decades: humectants to draw water in, emollients to smooth, occlusives to stop it leaving, and lipids to support the barrier. Almost all of it is inexpensive.

The four things that decide performance
1. Occlusives. Petrolatum, dimethicone, shea. Unglamorous, and the reason a cheap ointment outperforms an expensive gel on very dry skin.
2. Humectants. Glycerin high in the ingredient list is a strong signal. Glycerin is cheap, extremely well studied, and does most of the work people credit to hyaluronic acid.
3. Lipids. Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids support the barrier itself. Worth paying a little more for if your skin is eczema-prone.
4. Fragrance and format. Fragrance is the most common cause of body-lotion irritation, and the most common reason people prefer the expensive one. Format — lotion, cream, ointment — matters more than brand.

What a dupe cannot copy
- Texture and absorption speed, which is genuinely where formulation skill shows.
- Actives at a meaningful concentration: retinol, urea at 10%+, high-strength acids.
- Consistency between batches, occasionally, in the very cheapest ranges.
If you like using a product, you will apply it often enough to matter. That is a real performance factor, not a vanity one.
How to swap sensibly
- Match the format, not the marketing: replace a cream with a cream.
- Check glycerin and an occlusive appear near the top.
- Prefer fragrance-free if your skin is reactive, itchy or eczema-prone.
- Buy one, use it for two weeks on one limb if you want a fair comparison.
Browse formulas in bodycare, and the rest of the Body Care Edit covers where exfoliation and actives are worth the spend.
Cosmetic information only. Eczema, psoriasis and persistent itching benefit from a professional plan alongside a good moisturiser.
Noui's verdict
- Save on daily body lotion, spend on treatment formulas — high-percentage urea, retinol or acid products, where concentration genuinely differs.
