How Often Should You Actually Exfoliate Your Body?
Body skin is thicker than facial skin, but it is not indestructible. A frequency guide by skin type, plus the signs you have overdone it.
Noui Collective · · 7 min read

Body skin turns over more slowly than facial skin and has fewer oil glands on the limbs, which is why legs and arms go ashy while a back breaks out. Exfoliation helps both — at a frequency almost nobody gets right first time.

A frequency guide
| Skin situation | Chemical exfoliation | Physical |
|---|---|---|
| Normal, no concerns | 1–2x a week | Optional, gentle |
| Keratosis pilaris | 2–3x a week, plus daily moisturiser | Avoid scrubs |
| Body breakouts | 1–2x a week, avoid active spots | Avoid |
| Very dry or eczema-prone | Once a week or less, patch first | Avoid |
| Before fake tan | Once, 24 hours ahead | Fine, gently |
| Ingrown hairs | 2x a week, not immediately after shaving | Soft brush only |
Chemical or physical
Acids — glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic for congestion, urea for stubborn roughness — dissolve the bonds holding dead cells. They are more even and gentler than they sound.
Scrubs and brushes remove the surface mechanically. Fine for smooth, tolerant skin; poor for bumps, breakouts and reactive skin, because pressure varies with your mood.
Pick one method at a time. Combining them is the single most common cause of a stinging, tight, over-exfoliated body.
Noui explainer
The over-exfoliation signs
Skin that stings in the shower, looks shiny and taut, flushes easily, or feels tight an hour after moisturiser. Stop for a fortnight, moisturise twice a day, and restart at half the frequency.

Where it fits in the shower
After cleansing, before shaving, and always followed by moisturiser on damp skin — the sequence in the everything shower method.
Seasonal adjustment
Cut back in winter, when central heating and hot showers already dry skin out. Increase slightly in summer if you sweat, wear more, and tan.
Cosmetic information only. Do not exfoliate broken, sunburnt or inflamed skin, and get persistent rashes assessed.
Noui's verdict
- Once or twice a week for most people, up to three times for keratosis pilaris, less in winter. One method, then moisturiser — that is the whole discipline.
