How it works

Warm water, gentle exfoliation and sustained massage remove product build-up and sebum from the scalp and follicle openings, while the massage itself is profoundly relaxing. A cleaner scalp is a reasonable goal; hair growth claims are a step beyond what this can promise.

What a session actually involves

Usually a scalp assessment, then a double cleanse, a scalp scrub or enzyme step, an extended massage — often 20 minutes or more — and a signature cascading warm-water rinse over a specialist basin. A mask, treatment and blow-dry finish. Many people fall asleep.

What people usually consider it for

  • Dry or itchy scalp
  • Oily scalp
  • Flakes or dandruff
  • Sensitive scalp
  • Dullness

This reflects what the treatment is commonly used for — not a claim that it will work for you.

When it may not be suitable

  • You have an untreated scalp infection, open sores or severe flaking that has not been diagnosed
  • You have recently had scalp surgery or a transplant without clearance

This list is not exhaustive. A qualified practitioner should assess you before any treatment.

Things to weigh up

  • A clean, comfortable scalp is the honest promise here — not new hair
  • Very frequent deep cleansing can leave a dry scalp tighter

What the evidence looks like

Japanese head spa culture is well established and scalp cleansing and massage are plausible for comfort and build-up. Evidence that head spa treatments grow hair is not established.

Questions worth asking first

Ask what is included — some listings are a 30-minute wash, others a genuine two-hour ritual. Check whether scalp imaging is included and whether it is used to sell courses.
